"Recitatif" Discussion

Since we didn't have an opportunity to discuss "Recitatif" in class today, you will start the conversation here with your posts. In your post, please do the following:
  • Share thoughts on Twyla and Roberta's relationship with at least one quotation to support your interpretation.
  • Pose an open-ended interpretation question to the next blogger.
  • Respond the question offered by the last blogger.
  • Optional: Respond to questions posted by other bloggers that weren't necessarily right before you but that interest you.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Extra Challenge: Bob Dylan Dedication

Why in the world would Joyce Carol Oates dedicate "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" to Bob Dylan?

"A Respectable Woman" Response

I apologize to all of you early bloggers, but I'm afraid I have not been able to post the prompt until now. Here it is...

What do you think Mrs. Baroda has "overcome" at the end of the story? What is she going to do in the future? Why do you think so? Use specific evidence from the story (quotes are helpful) to support your opinion. Make sure to read and respond to what others have written as well.

See you all tomorrow!

Final Thoughts on "Cheers" and Stories in General

Share your final thoughts on "Cheers" and the qualities of stories in general. Have your opinions on “Cheers” and the characteristics of a story changed or been reinforced? How and why? Please refer to specifics of what was said in small and large group discussions, the handout on plot, and the piece of writing ("Cheers") itself.

"Cheers" Response

After reading and rereading "Cheers," decide whether you think it is a story or not. Once you've made your decision, share your thoughts with the rest of us! Make sure to include at least three reasons for your opinion, and respond to what others’ have said thus far (which means you'll have to read what has already been posted). Try to avoid simply repeating what others have said and make it your own!
