I think this is not a story because, even though the story line is really vague it doesn’t have a beginning middle or end, it’s more of a passage of a story. This story doesn’t have a climax, and although it has a lot of description it doesn’t have a plot at all, there for it doesn’t quality for a short story in my option, I would put it under the “passage” category.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that this is a story either. It is more like a memory than a real story. She is just going on about this sewing lady who made her a cheerleading suit once. Stories have a meaning behind them, this doesn’t, it’s a detailed description. This “piece” also didn’t use quotation marks when the sewing lady was talking, not really related to the question but I thought it made it a little harder to read.

I agree that cheers is not a story because It does not have a begining, middle and end. This piece also did not have a character backround and you don’t know whose telling the story and why she is telling that story. This piece did not have a climax either . All these reasons are why I did not think cheers is a story.

These posters cheated, they posted at like, 8 a.m.! Anyways, I agree with what they said. "Cheers" is not a story. It's more like a passage from a story. This "thing" pretty much only introduces one character and explains her hobby, and like Mike S. said, this story has no climax. Doesn't cut if for me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this piece doesn't seem like a story to me. These previous posts all have the right idea. This wasn't a story. There wasn't a plot to it. I don't feel that it had any meaning at all or any significance to what they were getting ready for and why the woman made those cheer leading outfits. This piece confused me too because although it was very descriptive, each sentence jumped to a different topic.

I think that it is a story because it describes a set of moments in time. I disagree with Mike and Stefan when they said that the story doesn’t have a meaning. The piece isn’t about why the outfits were being made, but more about the woman making them and the process of events on that specific day. I also think that the piece does have a beginning, middle and end. It’s not like a novel with a dramatic climax or conflict, but I still think that it is a story.

I agree that this isn't a story in that it isn't a book story, for the above reasons, but more like a story as in a remembrance of the past. It seemed like she was talking to a friend or another person about this sewing woman and the outfit that the woman made had an impact, whether small or big, upon the author's life.
ReplyDeleteThe author described where the sewing woman lived as if she went to the house frequently and knew of the woman's profession by making a specific statement about what she did. Another point about her intimacy with the sewing woman was her description of the room she was in and the details of how the sewing woman looked.
I agree that since there wasn't a climax or a clear beginning, middle and end, by definition, this is not a story. On the other hand, not going on the "definition of a story" by a teacher's standards, this would be called a story in a casual sense, like in casual conversation. If I told someone about the time I went to the store when I was little, there probably would not be a climax or a clear beginning, middle and end, but I would still call it a story about my childhood. I think this passage is like that. I think it is a memory, like Stefan said, but memories can still qualify as stories, I think, as Kevin said. And as it is a memory, I agree with Paige that it most likely has a meaning, as memories generally do. I agree with Stefan though that the lack of quotation marks did make it a bit confusing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Paige all the way. Although this piece doesn't have a dramatic climax or conflict, it does have a beginning, middle, and end in which a girl is narrating a memory she had when was little. By definition, a story is just a tale, shorter and less elaborate than a novel, which is exactly what this piece is. I disagree with some people that said it did not have a meaning and therefore was not a story. It wasn't about why the suits were being made but more about the woman, like Paige said. I also disagree with Dan; the piece isn't just introducing one character and her hobby, but completely describing her and maybe even hinting at her life and how she feels about making the suits. "All you girls are about the same"..."How'd I manage all these kids an no man"..."Lord, you do look pretty."

I agree with Mary. I believe that "Cheers" is a story. It's telling the memories of a girl and the sewing lady that lived down the street and made all the cheerleading outfits. Even though there isn't a clear or maybe even exciting beginning and end there is definitely a story within the 4 paragraphs. There is narration and description about the time that makes it a story that the girl is telling us about from her past.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Mary again that this story isn’t about the cheerleading suits its about the woman that makes then and her way of life.
Everyone that says it isn't a story i can see where you come from because the way it is written with nothing sticking out saying this is definitely a story but, stories don't always have to be so clear sometimes we have read and think about it more for us to see that she is telling us a story in "Cheers".

I agree with the idea that this is a story. Although not one that someone would choose to read it has the basic aspects of a story. It has a beginning with background information about the sewing women. It has a middle area where it goes into what the sewing women is doing. And it has a clear ending, where the women is paid. Although I would agree that it lacks most things that make a story "Good", like climax, and did not really leave you with anything after you finished reading it. I do believe it was a story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with people like Gen, Stefan and Mike because I don't think this is a story either. I see it as more of a beginning of a story but not completed, like Gen said, a passage. Like others said, it doesn't have a clear beginning, middle and end, though I think this could be the beginning. ALthough without the middle and end you do not have a story.

No, it's not a story for the same reason this isn't a story. There is no plot, no protagonist and antagonist, and most importantly no conflict(s). I agree that it should be labeled under the passage category because it sort of seems like it was taken from a little girls diary or a letter from somebody. I'm not sure if i would say it's a passage FROM a story, but it certainly seems possible. -Tony Sergi (i'm not making an account and getting thousands of junk mail messages a day in addition to the million and a half already in my inbox, sorry)
ReplyDeleteI also agree with the people that said this passage is not a story. I have to agree with Megan G 100%. This basically is a few descriptions of a woman and what she does in her life but doesn't truly have any purpose. And to go along with what Mike S said and how that the passage has no beginning, middle, and end; it's more of a few paragraphs thrown together that certainly does not have a climax or any intended storyline. Lastly, i believe that this isn't a story because the person who is telling the story is unknown or not indicated, yet the put themselves in the passage. I have come to the conclusion that this is not a story.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to agree with almost everyone above me. This peice, even though it is very well written isn't set up like a story, it doesn not have a clear climax or begining and end. I agree with Sean when he says that is basically just a woman and the things that happen in her life. Thats it.

i mostly agree with everything geoof said, this is not a story, it has no plot, no begginnign middle or end, no protagonist nor antoagonist and also no conflict. This is not a story
ReplyDelete--rachelv
I thought that it wasn’t a story. It was mostly a quick writing on one person telling people about his life or what he was doing at the time. But the main problem is that it’s lacking. The lack of a plot, characters, feelings, punctuation, and grammar makes this a reading, but not a story.
ReplyDeleteDefinition of a story - a narration of the events in the life of a person or the existence of a thing, or such events as a subject for narration. It's a written account of a person's experience, which makes it a story, regardless of whether or not we actually know who the person is, and it having basic qualities of a good story. But beyond that I think that it does have a clear intro, supporting paragraphs that give information necessary to the rest of the story, a challenge/conflict, and an end/resolution. The story begins with the author explaining the sewing woman, and the setting which shes in. The second paragraph explains what shes setting out to do; she has to create a uniform for the girls. In the third paragraph she makes the uniforms which is the resolution, and in the fourth paragraph the author ends the story.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this is a story because the grammar is not good, and there are no protagonists or antagonists. There is also no plot, or conflict. In our group, this is what we discussed.
