Extra Challenge: Bob Dylan Dedication

Why in the world would Joyce Carol Oates dedicate "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" to Bob Dylan?

  1. does extra challenge mean i dont have to do this?
Bob Dylan songs were mroe rebellious and this story seemed to be revolving around times changing and while idk Bob Dylan very well there is prob a line in one of his songs that is the equivelent of 'where are you going, where have you been?'

  2. After doing some google searches I found a surprising tread. If you type in "Bob Dylan and the devil" you get a fairly large amount of songs with either Devil in the name, or in the lyrics. Also on a conspiracy theory site people were discussing whether or not Bob Dylan made a deal with the Devil. So if our inclass discussion about "Where are you going, where have you been?" really has demonic symbolisim then that would make sense why it was dedicated to Bob Dylan.

  3. One site said that Oates was inspired to write the story after listening to Bob Dylan's song "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue."
If you look at the lyrics, you can see a lot of connections to the story...

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

  5. I believe that it was dedicated to Bob Dyaln, because he has always been known for his sometimes "blues" rock, and how there are stories that he had made a deal with the devil for his music.

I reseach Bob Dlyan and mostly read about his history and some his songs. I have never heard about this guy ever. I wonder what did Bob get in enter of the deal with the Devil. To bad.

  8. Im not sure that I should write on this wall because we talked about it in class... but I feel that it was dedicated to Bob Dylan because its based upon one of his songs, and the characters had Bob Dylan's style that was considered to be rebellious in his time
