  1. I’m still undecided, I think that cheers could be a short story, but I still feel it is more of a passage, because it really doesn’t have a plot, or a climax. I feel zero emotions reading it; therefore it is really tough debate. I liked the discussion in class, because with everyone opinion I got a little bit more persuade for either side.

  2. I'm now unsure if it's a story or not, because the reading showed that the reading had some things that are needed for a story, but it also is missing things, so overall, I'm undecided

  3. The reading seemed to think that "Cheers" was more of a story than not one. The 'plot' of "Cheers" is the oblique method which I don't even consider a method. the reading even said that it lacked action, conflict and resolution. It was a boring to read and it does not have enough qualities to be a story.

  4. I have changed my thoughts on “Cheers”. I now think that it is a story. How I think of characteristics of a story have also changed. Now I think that a story can be simple. It doesn’t need 2 have all of the elaborate things that a novel has. Credit for my change in thought has 2 go to Eryn. She really did prove her thoughts for why it is a story.

  5. I don't care what the dictionary says. Even that was wriiten by a person it didn't magically appear with the right answers about everything. Cheers may be a story but if so not one i would read, and not one i would ever want to see published. I think after reading a story the reader should feel like they've either learned something or spent their time well. I didn't feel either of those after reading that "story" _-Tony Sergi

  6. After today’s discussion and homework reading I decided that cheers is a story but not a well written one. What I learned today is that is not really a guide line for a story. A story can be anything like cheers it was lacking a lot of characteristics that make a good story but it was still published and fits the oblique method of plot. My view changed from a no to a yes after today’s discussion.

I agree with Gennifer that "Cheers" is more of a passage than a story also I agree with Stefan that this passage is a oblique method. I still have the same opinion that "Cheers" is not a story. Also, have a goood night!

  8. This excerpt from the book reinforced my "second" belief that it was a story. When we first read Cheers in class, I had thought that it was not a story with the reasons listed above, but after reading it a second time, I realized that it looked like a memory rather than something happening at that moment. Not many people reminisce on the past without meaning for it to be a story or a tale of some sort, which leads me to believe that this is a story. Using the excerpt, I also believe that this is of the Oblique Method for a plot.

  9. Since the "Elements of Fiction" paper said that it was a story, i guess i'll just have to believe it. Although, in my head I still don't see it being one. I still believe it is a passage or part of a story. They used the Oblique plot method with the story "Cheers" which is interesting, so the story has a plot, but i still don't see the conflict, character development or climax within this "story", therefore i'm undecided as to whether it is a story or not.

  10. Discussing "Cheers" today in class changed my opinion on if it is a story. Asher brought up the definition of a story and it was a sequence of events. If that is the definition, then i think that "Cheers" is a story. So I changed my opinion from a no to a yes.

  11. I still don't believe that cheers is a story, in any way shape or form. it STILL lacks all important parts of a story. Also, because it was not just a passage from a different story, i believe that it lost all chance of having any plot, of any kind. not including oblique...because it is way too vague.

  12. I though that "Cheers" was a story and after the discussion and the reading, I still do. If the definition of a story is a sequence of events, like Mike said, than it is definitely a story. A big part of the debate in class was whether or not the story had a plot. From the reading, we know that the story's plot is oblique, so I guess it has a plot! I still disagree with some people that say it does not have character development or conflict.

  13. I still think cheers is not a story, like gen said it is more of a passege then a story, and has no conflict

  14. I still believe that "Cheers" is a story. The reading showed "Cheers" had an actual method to how it was written. Thus showing that it had that quality. As I have said before I did not enjoy reading "Cheers", but that does not make it any less of a story in general. We are not dicussing whether or not this is a good story, but whether it is a story. The packet and dictionary only made me see this more. So it appears you must discredit that packet also...

  15. Before, I thought that 'Cheers' was a story and now I definitly believe that it is. This is backed up by many things mentioned in the reading. I like how under 'The Oblique Method' it said that that this type of plot 'seems to lack a plot, in the traditional sense.' I think that inorder to like or appreciate this story, you have to look beneath the surface, like the reading said. I like how after reading the piece multiple times, you still have questions and things to think about. After the discussion in class, i think that the only requirement for a story is that it has to communicate something to the reader.

  16. I still feel "Cheers" is a story and I’m happy that I was able to convince some people. There was a clear story of the lady or a memory the girl had of a sewing lady down the street.
A lot of the class discussion had to do with what makes a story and though this story isn't like most it has the some qualities like communication and it has a meaning. Also this story goes in order which can make it a story good or not.

  17. I still think "Cheers" is a story. The paper about it only reinforces my opinion. I agree with Mike S. that it is possibly a poorly written story, but it still is one. The reading on "Cheers" says that the plot could be using the "Oblique Method," like Kevin said and be more hidden in the story, therefore, the plot is not really obvious, so maybe the reason I think it is not a great story is that the plot sort of went over my head. Either way, I still think this is a story and the fact that it does have a plot of some sort only reinforces my opinion.

  18. Now that we've had the discussion, I am convinced Cheers is a story. There may not have been a clear beginning, middle or end, or yes, even plot like Alli and Mike S said, but Cheers is definitely a poorly written story but a story nonetheless. This passage had a description of events and also created a direction for the story to travel in. So I say it is a story, but it's clearly poorly written.

  19. Our discussion in class reinforced what I believed before, that "Cheers" is a story, just not a very interesting one. I didn't really feel as though anybodies arguments persuaded me to think that "Cheers" wasn't a story, but the points made by some of the people who believed it was a story reassured me that it was.

  20. I think this is a story because it seemed to have a plot. It didn't have the best grammar, but in group we discussed that anyone can write a story. Something happened, which makes it a story. Although something doesn't always make sense, it is still a story.
