I apologize to all of you early bloggers, but I'm afraid I have not been able to post the prompt until now. Here it is...
What do you think Mrs. Baroda has "overcome" at the end of the story? What is she going to do in the future? Why do you think so? Use specific evidence from the story (quotes are helpful) to support your opinion. Make sure to read and respond to what others have written as well.
See you all tomorrow!

First comment, this is odd. Alright,
ReplyDeleteI believe that what Mrs. Baroda has overcome was her "attraction" to Gouvernail. I think that in the future she will try to stay home the entire time without giving into the impulse. I believe this because I think that she took time to get over the attraction when she kept telling her husband that she did not want Gouvernail to visit again. As she stated she viewed herself as a "respectable woman". So it is possible that maybe she wanted to have Gouvernail over again to prove to herself that she could stay at home without having impulses and without acting upon them. One thing that goes against my thoughts is the last line, "This time I shall be very nice to him". You could take that two ways, the first being that she will not be rude and still not give into impulses. Or not be rude, but the impulses, might not be controlled.
Idk that part confuses me, any thoughts?
I believe that what Mrs. Baroda overcame was her sub conscious attraction to Gourvernail. This was the only real thing for her to overcome that was evident in the reading. However, in order to do so, she must first give in to the attraction to see how he would react, thus giving her a way to judge how she feels about him. The only way for her to go back to being a "respectable woman" would be for her to be ready to go back to her senses when the time came. By preparing for a year, she feels she is ready to control her feelings.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with Nick on this one. She's either going to go through the time being polite and a respectable woman or she is going to give into the impulses. I think she overcame her "interest" in G-nail because she stayed away from him once, I think that kind of proved to her that she's able to do it again and i think it will be a challenge for her. She kind of went through the whole story saying that she liked him but she didn't know why. I think now that she knows why she liked him, she will be able to handle it better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nick. I think that what Mrs. Baroda has overcome is her temptainos or like nick said, "attraction" to Gouvernrail. I think that the main reason she told her husband that he could come back (after so long of saying he couldn't) is because she wants to prove to herself that she's a respectable woman. She says she is one but after the temptations she had she wants him to come back, just for her to make sure.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mrs. Baroda was overcoming two things when she said "I have overcome everything!" to her husband. I think what she was telling him was that she had overcome her annoyance with Gouvernail, or frustration with him, the issues she expressed to her husband. On the inside I think she was saying that she had overcome her attraction to him, and wanted to prove to herself that she is, as everyone is saying, "a repectable woman." I think in the future, she is going to have some sort of affair with Gouvernail because I don't think she is actually over him. The way she keeps saying that she is a "respectable woman" makes it sound like she is trying to convince herself as well as the reader. The last thing she says to her husband is "This time I shall be very nice to him," which I think she and her husband both take as she will just be nice to him. But I think this line is a hint to herself and the reader that she will end up having an affair with Gouvernail.
ReplyDeletei think that Mrs. Baroda wanted her husband back because i think she wanted to prove that she can be trust full and i think she thinks she made a mistake and she wants to fix it. she knows what she did wrong and would like to fix it
ReplyDeleteFor a lot of the story, Mrs. Baroda was confused by Gouvernail. She said multiple times that she was frustrated with him, yet she still liked him. At the end I think that she is getting over her interest or curiousness with Gouvernail even though she makes her husband believe that she is overcoming her frustration with him. I don’t think that Mrs. Baroda invited Gouvernail back for her personal reasons. The final paragraphs make it seen like she has too much pride to let her attraction to Gouvernail turn into anything. At the beginning the speaker talks about him not being a ‘man about town’ and how Mrs. Baroda is a ‘society woman’. A form of ‘peer pressure’ could also influence her decision to not have an affair with Gouvernail. But, as has already been said, the last sentence could be taken in two different ways.

i think that mrs baroda will end up having a affair with governail in the future becase she wont be able to resit the temptation becuse at the end of the sotrie she Said she had overcome the situation a year later the next time she seems him "ill be very nice to him"i think that the whole time she was botling up her feelings for him and she wont be able to resist. and sheel let governail think she is interest in him. i thinks thats a possbleity in this story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what the majority of the other bloggers had posted. Mrs. Baroda clearly has an attraction toward Gouvernail. And how the title of the passage is called "A Respectable Woman," my guess says that it is portraying how Mrs. Baroda would act if/when Gouvernail returned for another stay at their house. As for Mike S' theory about the two of them having an affair, I'm going to say that would be an unlikely scenario if she were to be a "Respectable Woman".
ReplyDeleteI think that Nick is right. I think that she had come to think of herself as a "Respectable Woman". When Gouvernail came around she found herself attrcted to hm and having to remind herself that she was a "Respectable Woman". In the story it says "she wanted to reach out her hand in the darkness and touch him with the sensitive tips of her fingers upon the face or lips. She wanted to draw close to him and whisper against his cheek- she did not care what- as she might have done if she had not been a respectable woman." I think that says tha she was thinking of giving in. I think maybe she had been promiscuous in her past and had been able to give that up when she got married. I think that in the future she will try harder to control herself.
ReplyDeleteI feel that there is a possibility that she could give into her impulses in the future, but i also think that for the time being, she has overcome those feelings and the reason why she wants him to come back is because she wants to tests those feelings. I feel that she really does want to be a "Respectable Woman" So, overall i agree with nick and almost everyone in here.

ReplyDeleteI dont believe that she can control her feelings with the Mr. Governail. Tempation always comes back, if I was her shoes I would not invite Mr. Governail again.
I know I'm responding really late, but i think she is overcoming the fact that she is considered a "respectable woman" even though she doesn't want to be one.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if she came to realization with herself that she maybe isnt a respectable woman because even though she is supposed to be because of the society she lives in.
ReplyDeleteI believe that something between her Mr. Governail may occur when and if he comes back because she said she would be nicer.
"she wanted to reach out her hand in the darkness and touch him with the sensitive tips of her fingers upon the face or lips. She wanted to draw close to him and whisper against his cheek- she did not care what- as she might have done if she had not been a respectable woman." Even though know she didn't give into teptation i believe that next time she wont be able to since she even had to leave and not return until Mr. Governail left.

I used to think that she was going for the affair, but i guess you can never tell whether nice means "nice" or nice as in respectful, so i think that she is going to try to become a more respected person and stay faithful to her husband, besides the fact in the 1800's adultry=death penalty, isn't that how salem witch trials started?

ReplyDeleteI'm in the other class and I couldn't find my class page or have access to a computer until this morning. Anyway at the end of the story she has overcome her fear of trying to know this Gouvernail man. She is a respectable woman supposidly so I think thats why she didn't make a move on him at first. I think if this continues there could be potential for her doing some risky business with this man in the future. "...she proposed, wholly from herself, to have Gouvernail visit them again." I think if he comes back she wont be able to control herself because the temptation would be too great. I don't think she will be able to control herself if he comes back.
I agree with Jamie. I think that her saying that she's a respectable woman is her trying to convince herself of it. She was able to resist him the first time but I think that when she says that she "overcome everything" and that he should come its her giving into her temptation, not resisting it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jamie and Asher, She just said that she's a respectable woman because she could've been inpressing her husbands friend. She want's to spend more time with his friend and that is not a good thing. This will ruin their marage if that happens, they could get a devorce. It could end up to be more than just friends, and then things will go downhill.
